This pokie glossary explains the words used on game screens, paytables, bonus offers and withdrawal pages. Use the alphabetical sections to look up a term, then follow the linked guides when you need the full calculation or rules. The most useful distinction is between money staked, money returned and money you can actually withdraw: those figures can describe very different things.

Welcome offers: read the terminology first

Use the definitions below to interpret the offer, bonus code and conditions in this comparison. A headline percentage describes the promotional award; it does not tell you the wagering basis, eligible games or withdrawal restrictions. Read those conditions before accepting an offer.

Three distinctions worth learning first

Return is not profit

A $6 prize on a $2 spin gives a $4 net gain for that spin. A $1 prize on the same stake leaves a $1 net loss.

RTP is not win frequency

RTP describes theoretical return. Hit frequency describes how often an award occurs. Neither promises a profitable session.

Wagering is not a withdrawal limit

Wagering sets a playthrough condition. A cashout cap limits an eligible amount; a payment limit controls how much can be sent at once.

A–B: accounts, bets and bonuses

Account balance

The amount displayed in an account. It may combine cash, restricted promotional funds and pending awards. The main balance is not necessarily the withdrawable balance; open the transaction and bonus breakdown for the distinction.

Autoplay

A setting that starts consecutive spins without pressing the button each time, where offered. Each paid spin still costs money. Availability, stopping rules and safeguards depend on the game and market.

Base game

The ordinary round outside a special feature. Its symbols, awards and rules can differ from a free-spin or respin round. Read both parts of the help screen rather than assuming one paytable applies everywhere.

Bet / stake

The amount risked on a round. Look for the total bet, particularly when controls show a coin value, several coins or multiple lines. An additional feature charge can change the actual amount deducted.

Bonus balance

Promotional funds or associated winnings tracked under offer conditions. A bonus balance can be usable for play while remaining restricted for withdrawal. Check which balance pays the next stake and what happens when you cancel the offer.

Bonus buy

A purchase that enters a feature at a stated price instead of waiting for its normal trigger. A price of 80× a $1 base stake costs $80. Buying entry does not guarantee a prize above that cost. See bonus-buy pokies.

Bonus code

A code used to identify or activate a promotion. Entering a valid code does not override eligibility, expiry or deposit conditions. It may be required before depositing rather than after funds arrive.

C–D: cashout, credits and deposits

Cascade / tumble

A mechanic where symbols are removed and replacements enter, potentially creating further awards within the round. The exact removal and stopping rules vary. A cascade is not automatically a new paid spin.

Cashback

A promotion returning a stated share of a defined amount, often qualifying losses during a period. Its calculation may exclude games or subtract bonuses. Cashback may arrive as cash or restricted credit; the name alone does not tell you.

Cashout cap

A promotion-specific ceiling on money that can become eligible for withdrawal. It may be a fixed amount or a multiple. This differs from a game’s maximum win and from a cashier’s per-payment limit.

Coin value / denomination

The money represented by one game credit or coin. A displayed win of 100 credits is worth $1 at a $0.01 denomination, or $10 at $0.10. Confirm the unit before interpreting a large-looking number.

Contribution

The percentage of eligible stakes credited towards a wagering target. At 20% contribution, a $10 qualifying stake clears $2 of the target. An excluded game may contribute nothing. Contribution changes progress, not the game’s payout rules.

Demo mode

A game played with virtual credits rather than withdrawable money. It can demonstrate controls and features. A winning demo session is not evidence that the next real-money session will win. Read about free pokies.

Deposit / deposit match

A deposit transfers your money into the account; a deposit match adds a promotional award calculated from it. A hypothetical 100% match on $40 awards $40 in bonus funds, subject to the offer’s cap and conditions.

E–F: eligibility, expiry and free spins

Eligible game

A game permitted under a particular offer or feature. Eligibility and contribution are separate questions: a game might be allowed but contribute only part of each stake. Game exclusions can also apply to bonus purchases.

Expiry

The deadline to claim, activate or complete a promotion. These can be different deadlines. Check the timezone and whether a timer begins at registration, deposit, award or activation; do not assume it starts with your first spin.

Feature / feature trigger

A special mode or event and the condition that starts it. The trigger might require particular symbols, a collection or another specified event. Three scatters is a common example, not a universal rule.

Fixed jackpot

A jackpot with a predefined award under the game’s rules, rather than an amount continually increased by contributions. It may be expressed in currency, credits or stake multiples. Confirm whether changing the bet changes its value.

Free spins

Spins awarded without a separate stake for each awarded spin. In-game free spins are a game feature; promotional free spins are an offer, often with a set game, stake and expiry. Their winnings can have different withdrawal conditions.

G–H: game maths and held symbols

Gamble feature

An optional further wager using a win, where available, such as a card-colour choice. It can lose the amount risked. The existence of a gamble button does not make using it part of collecting the original award.

Gross return

The total awarded before subtracting the stake or other session costs. For a session, compare all returns with all paid stakes. Replaying a returned dollar creates another stake; it does not create a second dollar of deposited money.

Hit frequency / hit rate

How often a defined award occurs across rounds. The definition may include returns smaller than the stake, so a high hit rate is not a high rate of profitable spins. Look for the provider’s measurement basis.

Hold and win / hold and spin

A family of features that typically holds qualifying symbols while other positions respin. Collection rules, reset behaviour and prizes vary. A familiar feature name does not establish identical odds across games. See hold-and-win mechanics.

House edge

The theoretical share of stakes retained by the game over the long run. For a game with a stated 96% theoretical RTP, its complementary theoretical edge is 4%. This does not predict a 4% loss on each deposit.

I–M: verification, jackpots and maximums

Identity verification / KYC

KYC means “know your customer”. Verification checks identity and sometimes address or payment ownership. Required evidence depends on the operator and applicable rules. Use the official secure process; see account verification before sending documents.

Jackpot

A separately identified prize, often associated with specific qualifying conditions. It can be fixed or progressive. The amount displayed does not reveal the probability of winning it, the eligible stake or whether everyone shares the same jackpot pool.

Line bet

The stake assigned to one payline when the game uses that pricing model. If 20 lines each cost $0.05, the total is $1 before additional charges. Other games use a total stake directly, without independently adjustable line bets.

Max bet

Either a game’s highest selectable stake or an offer’s maximum permitted stake. Those are different limits. Being able to select a stake in the game does not prove it is permitted while a bonus is active.

Max win

The game’s stated maximum award under specified conditions. A 5,000× limit based on total stake means $5,000 at a $1 stake, if those rules apply. It is a ceiling, not a prediction or a likely outcome.

Megaways

A named game mechanic associated with changing reel layouts and numbers of winning ways. The advertised maximum ways may not appear on every spin. Ways are potential matching arrangements, not independent tickets with a guaranteed chance of winning.

Multiplier

A factor applied to a defined value. A 3× multiplier on a $4 qualifying win makes that award $12. Read whether it affects one combination, an entire round or only certain symbols; multiple multipliers need not combine identically across games.

N–P: net results, paylines and payouts

Net result

Returns minus stakes over the period being measured. With $200 staked and $170 returned, the net gaming result is a $30 loss. Deposits and withdrawals measure money movement and can give a different picture if funds remain in the account.

No-deposit bonus

A promotional award available without an initial qualifying deposit. It can still require registration, verification, wagering and compliance with a cashout cap. “No deposit” describes the initial funding condition, not unrestricted cash.

Payline

A defined path used to evaluate symbol combinations. Winning patterns often begin on a specified reel and require consecutive matches, but the paytable determines the actual rule. More paylines can also mean a different total cost.

Paytable

The game’s reference for symbols, winning combinations and award values. Check whether amounts are in credits, line-stake multiples or total-stake multiples. Help pages may separately explain wild exceptions, features, jackpots and maximum-win limits.

Payout

An ambiguous word that may mean a game award, a statistical return percentage or a withdrawal payment. Ask which meaning applies. “Fast payout” concerns processing; “high payout percentage” concerns game maths. Neither guarantees a winning session.

Pending withdrawal

A withdrawal request awaiting a processing stage. It is not necessarily money already sent to your bank. Approval, dispatch and receipt are separate milestones. The cashier’s status description should identify which stage has actually occurred.

Progressive jackpot

A jackpot whose amount increases through a defined contribution mechanism and resets under specified rules after a win. The pool can span one game or a network. A larger displayed amount does not, by itself, mean the jackpot is more likely to trigger.

R–S: randomness, RTP and symbols

Reel / reel strip

A reel is a column of game positions; a reel strip describes its underlying sequence of symbols in relevant designs. What appears on screen is only the visible window. Equal-looking symbols do not establish equal outcome probabilities.

Respin / retrigger

A respin repeats some or all reel positions under feature rules. A retrigger awards another feature or extends the current one after a qualifying event. Check whether the event costs an additional stake or is included in the original round.

RNG

Short for random number generator: the system used to generate random values that game software maps to outcomes. On an independent random game, a losing run does not make the next spin “due”. Pressing spin at a special moment is not a reliable prediction method.

RTP

Return to player: the theoretical proportion of stakes returned as awards across very large numbers of rounds. A 96% RTP is not a 96% chance of winning, a personal refund or a promise about the next 100 spins.

Scatter

A special symbol evaluated under its own rules, often without following a normal payline. It may pay, trigger a feature or do both. Required counts and eligible positions vary; the word “scatter” alone does not specify them.

Session / session return

A chosen period of play and its observed awards relative to stakes. Observed return equals awards divided by stakes, multiplied by 100. It can be far above or below the theoretical RTP without establishing that the advertised maths has changed.

Sticky bonus / sticky wild

Two unrelated uses of “sticky”. A sticky wild remains in place for a specified feature duration. A sticky bonus commonly describes promotional credit excluded from cashout, although operator terminology varies. Read which amount is removed and when.

T–W: turnover, volatility and wagering

Turnover

The accumulated value of stakes. A $20 deposit can fund more than $20 turnover if awards are replayed, or less if you stop early. Turnover does not mean profit and is not the same as the amount deposited.

Volatility / variance

Terms describing the spread or variability of outcomes. A high-volatility rating generally signals larger swings; ratings are not necessarily comparable between providers. Volatility differs from average return and does not specify exactly when a large win will occur.

Wagering basis / requirement

The amount to which a playthrough multiplier applies, and the resulting target. For a hypothetical $20 bonus at 10× bonus-only wagering, the target is $200. If the stated basis includes a deposit, calculate from that larger amount instead.

Ways to win

A system evaluating qualifying matching symbols across reels without fixed payline paths. Required adjacency, direction and symbol counts remain game-specific. A large ways figure does not tell you the RTP or mean every visible arrangement pays.

Wild

A symbol that substitutes for specified other symbols when forming wins. Exceptions commonly apply to scatters or special feature symbols. Expanding, stacked and sticky wilds describe behaviours, rather than a universal guarantee of a winning combination.

Withdrawal limit

A minimum or maximum payment amount, potentially set per request or period. A $500 daily payment ceiling is different from a $500 promotional cashout cap. See withdrawal limits for worked examples of the distinction.

Put the definitions together

Suppose a hypothetical offer awards a $20 bonus with 10× bonus-only wagering and 50% game contribution. The eligible wagering target is $200; clearing it requires $400 in qualifying stakes at that contribution rate. That is turnover, not a required $400 deposit or a predicted $400 loss. A separate maximum bet and cashout cap can still apply.

For game maths, the RTP guide explains average return and the volatility guide explains swings. Use the wagering calculator to test an offer’s stated basis, then read the bonus terms guide for restrictions the calculation cannot represent.

Check the rules behind the word

These are plain-English explanations, not replacement game rules. The UK Gambling Commission explains RTP and random outcomes and publishes a regulatory glossary of bonus terminology. Its legal requirements concern its own jurisdiction. Provider examples, such as Pragmatic Play’s wild, cascade and scatter description, show why individual game rules matter.

For Australia, ACMA warns about illegal online pokie services, withheld money and website blocking. Access to a site does not establish Australian authorisation. If gambling is causing stress or financial pressure, stop and use our responsible gambling support information.

Pokie glossary FAQs

What is the difference between pokies and slots?

Pokies is the everyday Australian and New Zealand term commonly used for poker machines and slot-style games. Slots is the more widespread international label. Neither name tells you a game’s rules, payout percentage or legal availability. Read the actual paytable, stake settings and feature conditions rather than assuming two games work alike because they share a label.

Does 96% RTP mean I will win 96% of my spins?

No. RTP describes theoretical awards as a share of stakes over very large numbers of rounds. It is not the probability of a winning spin. Hit frequency measures how often a defined award occurs, and even an awarded prize can be smaller than the stake. Your session can finish far below or above the stated RTP.

Are paylines and ways to win the same thing?

No. A payline is a defined path across the reels. A ways-paying game evaluates qualifying symbol matches without requiring those fixed paths. Both systems still have rules about direction, consecutive reels and eligible symbols. Compare the total stake and paytable, rather than treating a higher line or ways count as proof of better value.

What is the difference between a bonus feature and a casino bonus?

A bonus feature is part of a game, such as a triggered free-spin round or hold-and-spin mode. A casino bonus is a promotion provided under account-level offer conditions. Promotional free spins can therefore have expiry, game restrictions and wagering terms even when an in-game free-spin feature operates under the paytable. Check which meaning the page uses.

Does no wagering mean a bonus has no conditions?

No. A no-wagering description addresses a playthrough condition, not every rule attached to an offer. Eligibility, expiry, permitted stakes, verification and withdrawal caps may still matter, depending on the promotion. Read how the operator defines the phrase and whether it applies to the bonus, its winnings or both. Do not assume promotional credit itself is cash.

Why is my displayed balance different from my withdrawable balance?

A displayed total may include promotional credit, restricted winnings or funds already committed to a pending request. The withdrawable amount can also depend on unresolved offer conditions and payment rules. Check the balance breakdown, transaction history and withdrawal status. If the figures do not reconcile, ask support for the exact calculation before cancelling a bonus or staking more money.
